GCSE & KS3 ENGLISH
Our GCSE English Language and Literature lessons cover all major exam boards. We have a reputation for results. All our students progress and over 90% of our students have progressed around 3 grade levels.
Unlike subjects that can be learned largely through memorisation, English requires both knowledge and gradual development of skills such as comprehension, vocabulary, inference and creative writing. Starting early gives children time to develop these skills and become exam ready.
Our KS3 tuition builds the foundation needed for GCSE English: reading and comprehending increasingly challenging texts, understanding themes in texts and poetry, constructing and writing academic arguments and writing with structure and control. Working on these skills ensures that students are ready for the more challenging GCSE years.
Our goal is to give students the knowledge, analytical skills, academic writing skills and confidence to approach exams independently and confidently.
GCSE & KS3 ENGLISH LITERATURE 2026/2027 PROGRAMME
STARTING 06/09/2026
MODULE 1 : TEXTUAL ANALYSIS AND ACADEMIC WRITING
Length | 8 weeks
This block is the core foundation for all other English skills. These are skills your child will use throughout secondary school and into their GCSEs. In our experience, this is where students often make the most mistakes and lose valuable marks and exam time, often having to unlearn incorrect response techniques. This block is designed to help students develop skills for building stronger academic arguments, understanding exam and essay questions and structuring stronger, more effective responses.
Recommended for: Year 10 & 11
Accessible for: Year 9 students (younger students will be provided with clearly differentiated age-appropriate teaching & work)
MODULE 2: CREATIVE WRITING
Length | 8 weeks
Creative writing forms 25% of the final exam result. However, many students have not spent dedicated time developing this core skill. Our course has been developed to help students understand the literary techniques, planning techniques and higher-level language techniques required for effective exam responses. In addition to these skills, students will also practise using past papers.
Recommended for: Years 10 & 11
Accessible for: Year 8 & 9 (younger students will be provided with clearly differentiated age-appropriate teaching & work)
MODULE 3 : POETRY
Length | 8 weeks
For many students poetry is often the most demanding area of GCSE English Literature. Its compressed language, layers of meaning and use of literary techniques requires students to read and infer with precision and confidence. This block develops students’ ability to engage with poetry at greater depth, strengthening both their understanding of the texts and their ability to communicate their understanding through written responses. Year 10 & 11 students will have opportunity to practise exam question responses within this module.

MODULE 4: SHAKESPEARE AND 19TH CENTURY TEXTS
Length | 8 weeks
The language used in older texts can be a significant barrier for students. This block is designed to support students’ understanding of the language, themes and characters in more challenging GCSE texts as well as practising with exam-style questions and learning how to write controlled responses.
Recommended for: Years 10 & 11 only
MODULE 5: EXAM PRACTISE
Length | Ongoing
This ongoing module supports students preparing for their exams. Students will work through exam papers and exam style questions, tightening their technique and building skills and confidence before their exams.
Some of the skills covered are: Working under timed conditions . Planning an essay . Understanding exam questions . Writing organised, concise responses .

Our students have consistently achieved strong academic progress with previous 11+ students successfully gaining places at highly selective grammar schools including the Heckmondwike Grammar School, The Crossley Heath School, North Halifax Grammar, Hill House School, Colchester Royal Grammar and Chelmsford County High School for Girls, as well as scholarship places for independent schools including Sheffield Girls High, Birkdale and Leicester Girls High.
Our approach
Preparing for the 11+ is about far more than working through practice papers. Children need a strong foundation of vocabulary, comprehension, reading ability and written expression in English, and fluent arithmetic, mental maths reasoning skills and the ability to confidently select the correct methods for given questions in mathematics.
With over 20 year experience in education and examinations, we have developed an approach that focuses on exactly that.

As with all our lessons, we select resources specifically to address the skills individual students need.
Teaching children to pass exams
We don't teach simple memorisation. Students are taught how to approach unfamiliar materials, select appropriate strategies from a bank that they have been taught by us and use them effectively to gain the best results.
Small-Group teaching
Groups are deliberately kept small so that students receive individual attention while still benefitting from discussion, different approaches and the motivation of learning with their peers.
